Coloroom Pictures, which is best known for co-producing the Chinese blockbuster animated film Ne Zha, is set to turn cartoons into live-action TV dramas. It released the hit anime White Cat Legend on the video-sharing platform Bilibili on April 10. The action-comedy immediately became the top-rated Chinese-language TV drama on the review platform Douban, scoring 9.2 points out of 10.
It was authored by a cartoonist known by the pseudonym RC. With a total of 12 episodes, it’s set during the rule of Empress Wu Zetian in ancient China and tells the story of an official named Li Bing attempting to solve crimes with the appearance of a white cat. They carry out all kinds of thrilling adventures, protect powerless civilians and uphold justice.
The anime restores the architecture and customs of the Tang Dynasty: The bustling streets, merchants, the clothing and utensils and even light and shadow effects all bring people to Tang.
In terms of dubbing, Henan’s accent is conveyed in a manner so vividly that many people imitate the funny tone. The theme song, with an elegant and nostalgic music style, also helps to immerse the fans in the animated world.
“I love to watch it because it’s suspenseful and thrilling, provides historic knowledge and a lot more. People should watch and support our Chinese cartoon industry,” wrote a viewer on Douban.
